Question: Whats wrong with my headset from the xbox 360 elite bundle?

So I got the Xbox 360 Elite bundle with Halo 3: ODST and Forza Motorsports 3. So I go to use the headset online and when I plug the headset into the controller I can't hear the other people talking, but when its unplugged I can hear them from my TV. Whats more annoying is that when I speak into the mic I see a symbol that saids I'm speaking but I can't hear myself on the headset and I still can't hear other people anybody have any ideas? I've tried moving the knob up and down but it doesn't do anything I think. And sometimes I hear and feel this like tapping sound on my ear where the headset is almost like a person talking but really distinct taps. Please help me. Also, should the clicker thing be on the green or orange? Should the green or orange be showing?

Ok, it seems u dont know how to use a mic, thats k, i will try and help. first off, it should show green to talk. orange means mic's off, more or less. the knob is vloume to hear other people. now for ur problem now u will never hear urself talkin in the headset, only other people to fix ur problem: u will need to change ur voice settings which is in ur sytem settings
